Job Specification – Design Manager

Key Objectives
To provide fully value engineered, co-ordinated and accurately detailed designs based on a thorough understanding of our Customer’s requirements. Pay careful attention to detail and ensure that every aspect of each design works in a practical, as well as technical, sense and is presented so as to be easily understood by Site Supervisors and Operatives.

Specific Duties

Personnel Issues for Members of your Team:

Ensure that Company Policies and Procedures are understood and effectively implemented by you and your staff

Monitor staff performance/attitudes and maintain a positive environment that encourages harmonious working relationships both internally and externally.

Carry out Personal Development Reviews for each member of your team and identify training needs as appropriate.

Management of Workload within your Team:

Display clear leadership/control over all aspects of each design and support Engineering staff at client/main contractor meetings.

As part of the tender handover procedure, thoroughly review contract particulars with the Estimator/Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager and ensure that you gain a full understanding of the design/drawing input required and the time scales that you are working to.

Working with the appropriate Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager, ensure that each design is subjected to the full rigours of all value-engineering techniques available to us. Every endeavour is to be made to enhance profitability by reducing the scope of works, changing/relaxing the specification and identifying faster installation techniques. Notwithstanding the foregoing, proposed changes to the Employers Requirements/Contractor’s


Monitor design output progress on a job by job basis and take steps to ensure that each design is carried out
Initiate a series of checks to ensure that design output meets the requirements of the project and takes full account of all design related CDM/HSE implications.

Ensure that ALL drawings and documentation are approved and signed-off by the appropriate Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager PRIOR to being issued to any external party.

Ensure that you and your team discuss and agree ALL potential commercial/ contractual aspects/implications with the Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager BEFORE disclosing any details to any external party.

Once the base design has been established, ensure that subsequent changes are agreed with the Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager PRIOR to implementation.

Take the lead role in ensuring that each design is properly administered with appropriate paper work to support technical queries, drawing issues, drawing revisions, etc., etc. Drawing revisions are to be clearly identified for ease of reference and where appropriate listed as “Additions to the Tender Scope of Works” in the drawing revision box.

When workload dictates the use of external/freelance designers, assist the Contracts Engineer/Manager with the preparation of a formal scope of works/suitable
candidates/companies and arrange to spot check their work BEFORE it is issued for final approval.

Provide ongoing technical advise to Contracts Engineering staff.
Assist the Contracts Engineer/Contracts Manager with the production of O & M documentation and as fitted drawings.
