The Role:
Our client is seeking an experienced electronics engineer for the development of motor control electronics for mid- to high power brushless DC motors in automotive water and oil pump applications. The engineer will be involved in capturing new requirements, proposing design changes to meet new requirements, working with suppliers to implement designs and validating prototypes. The engineer will also be involved in dealing with customer enquiries, analysing field failures and providing feedback to project managers.
An engineer with experience of motor control or power electronics would be ideally suited to this role. The candidate must be comfortable working from first principles as well as with existing designs. It is anticipated that the engineer would take on a very hands on role, being involved in design, manufacture and testing, as well as trouble shooting, both on site and on occasions within customer facilities. The candidate must be able to demonstrate practical hands on experience.
Skills and Experience:
• B.Eng degree in electronic engineering or similar with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience. • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and solid electronic design experience from first principles with emphasis on power electronics (e.g. motor drives or power supply design) and analogue electronics. • Able to design with due consideration for the special demands of an automotive, high temperature application, including EMC, environmental, vibration, design for manufacture and test, high volume production, etc. • Able to modify existing designs to ensure EMC standards are met. • Experience of FMEA analysis. • Able to discuss design changes and failure analysis with customers. • Excellent communication skills in English, orally and written and experience of working to established documentation protocols (e.g. design analysis, test plans/reports, support and manufacture documentation). • Be quality driven and thorough in your work and find it easy to work with other people in a project oriented organisation. • Knowledge of control techniques for brushless DC motors. (preferable) • Experience of multilayer PCB design using CAD tools (such as CADSTAR or Proteus). (preferable) • Experience of high voltage (up to 500V dc.) power electronics (preferable)
Responsibilities will include the following: • Collaborate with mechanical and system design groups to produce effective overall designs. • Fully document design and test validation work to a high standard. • Participate in cross-disciplinary aspects of design projects with colleagues in Germany, Mexico, UK and the USA. • Validation testing of prototype electronics and motor designs in collaboration with mechanical and software engineers.
