Mechanical Engineering Student / Graduate – Engineering Department Support

Opportunity
Dow Corning is the world leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of Silicone Polymers and Silicon Chemicals for extensive end-user applications. Near to Cardiff, our facility in Barry, South Wales is the largest and most technologically advanced Silicone Manufacturing facility in the World. We’re looking for practical and highly motivated individuals who enjoy and excel at optimising manufacturing operations to join our manufacturing team.

Placement
Mechanical Engineering undergraduate or recently graduated students for medium (6 to 12 month) placement attached to the Engineering Department, providing engineering support alongside a group of Chartered Engineers within the Chemical Process industry.

Exposure
Mixture of office and site experience covering engineering design (principally process piping), strategic topics and general support work. Scope of work will require use of computer skills viz. Word, Excel, Visio, Autocad LT, and relevant parts of the Maintenance Management system, (SAP), and associated documentation digital repository (Documentum)

Design Projects
Review of plant and equipment modification/upgrade proposals, preparation of engineering designs including site measurement, drawings and bills of materials, preparation of work packages, procurement of materials and inspection of completed works.

Key Strategic Project Topics
Rotating Equipment
Review of information sources on existing pumps (SAP; Documentum, Project Files, Manufacturers literature) and site field checks with aim of ensuring equipment items are correctly identified, and all relevant details (inc. bills of materials) are accurately stored (digitally) in the correct locations. Includes the following :
• Wilden air driven diaphragm pumps
• Albany external gear pumps
• Hermetic canned motor pumps – wrt documentation
Pump Rebuild Templates in SAP – pilot use of those created and create new ones to cover all equipment types
Double seal system site survey (pumps and agi’s), labeling, specification, ensuring correct data exists in SAP and that adequate con mon tasks are being carried out and recorded.
Lubrication :
• Support of schedule review, including site surveys and entry of data into SAP
• Energy assessment of Molykote (Try CPPumpen bearing brackets indoors W920, little affected by load) & Belester additive.
• Auto lubers – survey & log those available (haz area/pressures/cost to buy/cost to refill/greases available etc.)
 Canned Motor Pump Bearing Wear monitors. Current status – wots not working. What needs fixing or disconnecting ?
 Equipment Bills of Materials. Revision and reorganisation into BOM groups of existing data for specific equipment makes. (e.g. Maag gear pumps)
 Bearing descriptions in stores. Define requirements (add to QM) and bring all up to standard.
 Review of new (capital) equipment documentation and archiving (requires contact with manufacturers.)
 Oils seals in pumps – Review, rationalize and amend stores descriptions (wrong types/materials frequency supplied) and BOM allocations
