Colwyn Bay (North Wales near Conwy) is a small sea-side town about 1.5 hours west of Manchester by road, close to the Snowdonia Mountains. Colwyn Bay Office is a small regional office which provides project management, civil, structural and geotechnical services to public and private clients in the North Wales area. Projects elsewhere in the UK and abroad are sometimes contributed to, as and when called for.

A near Chartered or Chartered Civil/Highway Engineer is required in Colwyn Bay office to assist the Principal Engineer in delivering civil and highway related schemes due to expanding workload and significant opportunities.

Job description
The role will provide a range of challenging and dynamic projects where you will have the ability to receive and develop a brief and contribute to the development of the design and construction process. This is an excellent opportunity for career development in a small office.

As Highway Engineer you will be required to be fully conversant with the Design Manual for Road and Bridges (DMRB) and be able to work under own initiative and lead a small team of engineers and technicians.

Duties to include:
• Financial control of projects to ensure that they are delivered within budget and to agreed programs. Prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for highways schemes
• Monitor the designs produced to ensure they meet the design briefs set by the Delivery Team
• Ensure designs are appropriate and meet the expected levels of technical excellence
• Seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used to design and construct them
• Liaising with internal and external clients and third parties

Candidate specification
Essential qualifications, experience, competencies and skills:
• HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• 2 years experience in highway/infrastructure design using UK codes
• Near Chartered or Chartered Engineer.
• Track record of delivering infrastructure/highways projects for Local Authorities and Welsh Assembly Government (WAG)/ Highways Agency (HA).
• Fully conversant with Design Manual for Road and Bridges (DMRB) technical directives and advice notes.
• Fully conversant with the Manual of Contract Documents.
• A working knowledge of Word, Excel and ACAD.
• Ability to deliver projects successfully within set deadlines.
• Computer-based analysis using off the shelf software.
• Ability to listen, consult and communicate proactively.
• Ability to write and speak in English fluently.

Desirable qualifications, experience, competencies and skills:
• BSc in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• 4 years experience in highway/infrastructure design using UK codes.
• Relevant drainage design.
• Commercially aware.
• Previous experience of site supervision.
• Ability to establish good relationship with staff and clients.
