Summary of the role
To create, maintain and support scientific software and to develop innovative object-oriented applications within the collateral effects assessment group.
Key accountabilities
• To help create and maintain software solutions against quality standards • To assist with re-engineering legacy scientific codes to industry best-practice • To provide software support to research scientists and customers • To assist in promoting software industry best-practice and quality assured software development
Knowledge, Qualifications, Experience, Skills
• Demonstrate understanding and experience of a modern software development methodology and current best-practice. The ability to identify and explain the philosophy behind a development methodology is more important than experience of any one specific process • Demonstrate full software development lifecycle experience: specifically the ability to assist with the identification and processing of requirements through to the delivery of an appropriate software solution • Demonstrate the ability to help produce deliverable software using a range of implementation languages and development tools • To assist with the development of innovative solutions using industry best-practice • BEng/BSc(Hons) Degree in Software Engineering or related subject, or the equivalent experience • Support to continue or attain Chartered status is available • Experience of, or a willingness to learn, multiple software languages and legacy software reengineering would be considered advantageous • Object-oriented software development language, in particular Java/C++ • Legacy software development language, in particular Fortran/C, would be an advantage • Familiarity with one or more standard development methodologies
