Role Overview
Atkins Defence is a progressive and rapidly expanding part of the Atkins group of businesses. We provide high-end technical and project management services to the prime defence companies. We are now seeking the right individual to join our growing Defence team in Derby. Our team in Derby provides specialist mechanical engineering, safety and reliability and project management services primarily to the Marine Sector of Defence, including supporting ongoing commitment to the UK Submarine Programme. - Demonstrate credible expertise in structural analysis (with particular strength in the fields of pressure vessel integrity, fatigue and fracture mechanics).
- Drive the development of the structural mechanics capability within the Derby office through recruitment, development of junior engineers and use of the supply chain.
- Take the lead in ensuring the continued high quality of our work.
- Develop structural analysis processes in line with current best practice.
- Lead design reviews and engage with counterparts in client organisation.

You must have a record of successful delivery and be capable of strategic thinking. Requirements
A chartered engineer or scientist, you will be Degree qualified or equivalent in an engineering or appropriate scientific discipline, with sufficient and appropriate professional experience to demonstrate technical credibility. You will have significant knowledge and/or experience in the following: - Static, thermal & dynamic structural analysis (through traditional hand calculation of Finite Element techniques)
- Fatigue and fracture mechanics
- Pressure vessel assessment
- Application and selection of relevant codes and standards in the above areas (ASME III, R6, BS 7608 etc.)
You will be expected to demonstrate the following attributes: Ability to apply knowledge across a range of industries and technologies (Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Rail, Aerospace etc.) Strong leadership Quality focussed, taking a pro-active interest in development and delivery of tasks Strong communication and presentation skills Commercial awareness Desirable: Ideally you will be: - Familiar with the submarine Nuclear Steam Raising Plant and/or the civil nuclear industry and the associated regulatory environment
Additional Information
- Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from client sites and/or temporary secondment to client’s offices may also be required.
- SECURITY - All candidates must be in a position to obtain UK security clearance to SC level. Additional restrictions may apply to certain projects.
