Civil Structural Design Engineer £30-35,000 Leicester
My client specialise in the design, build and supply of sophisticated engineering solutions and services to a wide range of sectors to include materials handling, nuclear, power and defence. They are currently recruiting for a Civil Structural Design Engineer to work from their head office in Leicester.
Providing civil and structural engineering expertise in support of the companies engineering activities, mainly in the nuclear power business sector. Duties are expected to include: • Building and structural steelwork specification and design • Producing design substantiation documents • Liaison with civil contractors and consultants • Acting as site civil engineer during construction phases • Building condition surveys
The successful candidate will be expected to work in project-based design teams and as a consultant / engineering analyst.
The position is likely to involve travel to (and working from) various offices and sites in the UK and abroad.
Candidate Qualifications: A good degree in Civil Engineering and having attained Chartered Civil / Structural engineer status (or being close to achieving this).
Desirable Experience
• Design experience in building and industrial structures in concrete and steelwork preferably on projects with a substantial mechanical, electrical, process or power related content. Site supervision and quality control of civil contractors. Knowledge of cost estimating for construction work and design fees would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with UK codes of practice in reinforced concrete BS8110, structural steelwork BS5950 and BS449, Masonry BS5628, Loadings for Buildings BS6399 and foundations BS8004. Some experience in geotechnical engineering and foundation design is also required.
• Familiarity with European and US codes of practice would be an advantage but not initially essential. The successful engineer would be expected to become competent to design to these codes given some training and whilst working on relevant projects.
• Experience of producing detailed calculations to the above codes – using traditional and computer-based methods of analysis.
• Experience of designing structures to resist earthquake and extreme wind loading would be advantageous but not essential. The successful engineer would be expected to develop design skills in these areas as appropriate to the projects in hand.
• UK nuclear experience would be an advantage, although civil engineers with other backgrounds (preferably related to heavy electrical and mechanical plant and process) will be considered.
• Experience of designing concrete structures or buildings for thermal loading would be advantageous.
