Avenue Scotland are currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer

Main purpose of the job

To manage and work within multi-disciplinary teams on major development projects, applying your mechanical engineering abilities to create innovative designs and implement sophisticated technologies into new products.

Specific responsibilities

You will be taking a lead role in planning, proposal generation, liaison with clients, management of a multidisciplinary team and hands-on product development. Your responsibilities will include:

Using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects
Working alongside design engineers to develop system requirements including liaison across other engineering disciplines
In depth analysis of system elements using a range of analytical tools
Responsibility for the growth and development of thermo-fluidic expertise and capabilities within the division
Working closely with engineers and technicians to implement design solutions
Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation
Management of client relationships
Mentoring and training of junior staff
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry, and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial and time restraints.

Initially, this position involves taking roles within development projects with exposure to all aspects of development from contract negotiation to final delivery. You will have contact with clients at an early stage, getting involved in defining work programmes, holding workshops and giving presentations. You will manage tasks within projects requiring delivery within tight timescales and budgets, managing both internal and external resources. There are opportunities for this side of the role to develop rapidly into management of projects including having full responsibility for delivery to our clients.

Minimum requirements
To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have:

An excellent first degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
A genuine passion for mechanical design, numerical analysis, and engineering in general
Significant experience in product design or other relevant industrial experience
A proven ability to manage a team of engineers and technicians
Able to show evidence of excellence within the work you have been responsible for
A creative approach to problem solving and concept generation
An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis in product development
Hands-on experience of 3D CAD, rapid prototyping, CFD and some FEA
In addition, experience of at least one of the following CAE packages is necessary:

Fluent or other CFD package
Matlab / Simulink
CAD (Pro-Engineer and / or SolidWorks).
Experience of any of the following would also be beneficial:

Pro-Mechanical or other FEA package
dSPACE rapid prototyping environment
Direct experience of product development in the consumer product or automotive industries would be beneficial, including knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes and electromechanical technology. Similarly, a post-graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience would also be advantageous.
