Main purpose of the job
Your role will be to take responsibility for the administration, support and strategy of our Linux/Solaris systems. In conjunction with this you will be responsible for all aspects of our IT security systems including Firewall, Web Content Filtering, IDS, Spam Filtering and ISO 27001 compliance.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group
The IT Services Group provides and supports a wide range of computing facilities within the company. This includes all aspects of providing working systems for office automation and technical computing.
The Unix environment is predominantly used for high performance computing. Utilised as an execution environment for electronic design simulations, mathematical analysis and data modelling, the systems also host source control systems for software engineering and validation. There is a mix of platforms ranging from mid sized Sun Solaris based systems to Linux machines for compute intensive loads. The systems are accessed by the majority of users by desktop PCs utilising either VNC clients or Xwin32.
The office automation is based on desktop and laptop PC’s, of which there are now more than 300. Key applications include Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes under Windows. In addition, we have a wide range of technical and other specialist computing systems including Sun workstations and Servers.
The IT Services Group supports all these systems. It defines new equipment to be bought, installs it, provides help and support to users, and undertakes routine security backups of the systems. It covers all aspects of hardware, commonly used software, and networking.
Specific responsibilities
To provide Support for our user base on all aspects of our Linux/Solaris environment Manage and maintain our Linux/Solaris environment including Apache and FTP Servers Licence management via FlexLM of Linux/Solaris applications To advise on the future strategy of our Linux environment To play a key role in the analysis of requirements, and setting of policy in respect of IT security including liaising with users and managers across the company To evaluate alternatives and prepare recommendations for the implementation of new IT security related systems including Firewall, Web Content filtering, IDS, Spam Filtering and ISO 27001 compliance To take day-to-day responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of our IT Security systems Undertake familiarisation sessions with new recruits on use of systems and Cambridge Consultants procedures as needed Minimum requirements Proven ability to implement and support Linux/Solaris systems A working knowledge of IT security best practices Demonstrable ability to understand user needs and select suitable solutions in an IT environment Experience of implementing and maintaining industry grade firewalls A relevant recognised industry qualification, eg RHCE, SCSA. A working knowledge of ISO 27001 would be an advantage Knowledge of Windows in a networked environment Good communication and interpersonal skills The ability to work well within a small team is essential Good organisation skills Self motivated
