Chief Engineer / Project Manager – Rolling Stock

As part of its strategic growth plans a leading engineering and strategic consultancy is planning to launch a new product group. The initial focus of the product group will be around the design and development of rolling stock, with special interest in diesel power packs for locomotives. The new product group will build upon their existing expertise in the transportation and energy sectors, and will draw upon recent success in developing cutting edge technologies such as hybridisation and energy management, allowing “cleaner” solutions.
This is an opportunity to take a leading role with in the organisation, at the forefront of the new Rail group. The role will support the growth of the rail sector business, and will allow the opportunity to build something new within a well resourced and respected organisation.
Role & Responsibilities:
The role will be focused on technical project management. Whilst a commercial aptitude is important, there is a strong focus on delivery of engineering (technology design and development) projects.
The Chief Engineer will close and deliver on design and development projects in the rolling stock arena, developing the organisation’s reputation as a key player in the sector, and will take responsibility for ensuring the quality of proposals and project delivery is maintained at a consistently high standard
He/she will play a key role in the evolution of new products and technology and the advancement of the Rolling Stock and Rail industry.

What you need to be able to demonstrate:
The incumbent will be an engineer (mechanical, electrical) who has worked in the heart of the rail and locomotive industry. He/she will possess a mixture of technical and commercial skills.
The successful candidate will:
- Have technical knowledge of the design and development of rolling stock and related systems.
- Have good knowledge of the European rail (rolling stock) supply chain - international experience is desirable.
- Be a qualified engineer (ideally Chartered status).
- Have excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence and initiate.
- Have experience preparing technical documents and proposals.
- Have experience managing bids and tenders for major contracts within the rail sector.
- A second European language is desirable.
